Floyd L. Bergstrom Sr., 74, of Warrens, died Thursday, April 12, at Mayo Health Systems in La Crosse.
He was born April 20, 1937, to Axel and Evelyn (Johnson) Bergstrom at Maiden Rock. He joined the U.S. Navy and served for 20 years. During his service time he served in the Vietnam War, the Cuban Crisis, and had the opportunity to sail around the world numerous times. After his service time, he moved to the Red Wing area and served as the custodian at the Red Wing High School. He was introduced to Carol Newlun and they were united in marriage on Dec. 10, 1983, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in New Lisbon. He moved to the Warrens area where he worked in the maintenance department at Ft. McCoy. He retired from Fort McCoy in 1999.
After his retirement, he worked for Shaw's Salvage Auto Body; he enjoyed visiting with the guys and working in the shop. He was a former member of the Union Rock American Legion Post. Floyd had a quiet personality and enjoyed working with his hands, especially if it was working on vehicles or tinkering with engines. Floyd could fix everything and anything. He enjoyed working on his yard, where he built two lawn fountains. He also enjoyed splitting and cutting logs.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; four children, Floyd Jr. (Kim) of Twin Lakes, Jerry (Brenda) of Antioch, Ill., Charlene (Charles) of Libertyville, Ill., and Geoffrey (Carrie) of Tomah; two stepsons, Tim Clemmerson of Warrens and Larri (Deborah) Clemmerson of Garden Prairie, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Sabrina, Danielle, and Tyler Clemmerson, Melissa Leitsch, Kellie (Daniel) Fox of Twin Lakes, Kristin (Kory) Kurzan of Twin Lakes, Jeremy and Jennifer Bergstrom of Antioch, Dustin Bergstrom of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Brandon and Brett Bergstrom, both of Warrens, and Brandi Bergstrom of Wonewoc; five great-grandchildren, Kenden and Kameron Kurzan, Daniel Fox Jr., Kailyn Fox, and Zoe Leitsch; three sisters, Evelyn Yates of Minneapolis, Betty Jensen of Necedah, Mary Anderson of Red Wing; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Axel, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the St Matthews Lutheran Church, Town of Kirby. Pastor Phillip Enderle will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, at the Moravian Cemetery, Stockholm, Wis. Relatives and friends may call at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday and at the church on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until time of the service.
