PHOTO GALLERY: 2012 Gingerbread Contest


Prize winners in the annual Gingerbread Contest, held at the River Falls Public Library and sponsored by the River Falls State Bank, gathered at the library Thursday, Dec. 13, to collect their prize money. Kids left to right: Sebastian Bowden, Ellen Somerville, Ben Manns, Jorah Somerville, Lily Schartau and Alexa Hudek. Other winners pictured are left to right: Abby Inlow, Jill Wurdell and Kay Huppert. The contest accepts gingerbread entries from adults and youth, and graham-cracker creations from young kids.

  • Mary Putzier earned 2nd place in the adult traditional category of the Gingerbread Contest; she created this dark-colored cottage that contest judges called the Elegant Iced House.
  • Kay Huppert took 2nd place in the whimsical category of the Gingerbread Contest by making this Tiki Hut.
  • Sebastien Bowden got 1st place in the graham-cracker category by making Fort with a Friend.
  • Lily Schartau won second place in the youth-traditional category of the gingerbread contest by making a Log Cabin Schoolhouse.
  • Abby Inlow won 1st place in the youth-traditional category of the annual Gingerbread Contest by making a darker-colored Cottage of Christmas.
  • Ellen, left, and Jorah Somerville each won a prize in the River Falls Public Library’s annual Gingerbread Contest. The sisters often spend time with their grandparents, who live in River Falls. Ellen created the Ski Mountain, which earned a 1st place in the youth-whimsical category. Jorah tied for a 2nd place in the graham-cracker category with a “Star Wars”-themed entry.
  • Alexa Hudek won 2nd place in youth-whimsical category with a creation named Gumby and Pokey.
  • Ben Manns tied for second place in graham-cracker construction by making this house named Candyland.
  • Lori Rukstales won 1st place in the contest’s adult whimsical class with her elaborately decorated Candy Cane Carousel.
  • Jill Wurdell carried away not only the people’s choice award in the Public Library’s annual Gingerbread Contest, but also 1st place in the adult-traditional category.
