
Ellsworth School District teachers have pitched in to help upgrade local school buildings.

Crystal Kreye Francksen of Ellsworth was one of 120 students to receive a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UW-Madison at its 157th annual commencement ceremony May 14 at the Kohl Center. Dr. Francksen is the daughter of Chuck and Sharlene Kreye of Ellsworth. She is married to Eric Francksen of La Crosse. She is a 2002 graduate of Ellsworth High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Viterbo University in La Crosse in 2006.

The Ellsworth Community School District Foundation recognized the fact some students coming into the second and third grades could use some extra attention on their reading skills.

Thanks in part to funding from Operation Roundup, sponsored by Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services based in Ellsworth, the elementary schools in the district now have Smart Boards and projectors in each of their regular classrooms.

Jordyn Mark, a senior at Plum City High School, attended Badger Girls State at UW-Oshkosh June 20 through 25. Mark was selected by high school educators based on her potential leadership qualities. Badger Girls State was organized as a national Americanism activity and the first session was held in Washington, D.C., in 1947 and can be thought of as a special state in which citizens learn city, county and state government procedures by conducting the elections and business of those governmental bodies. It is a “learning-by-doing” process in which fiction and reality become one.

HAGER CITY—Tera Meerkins, a native of Hager City, has joined Teach for America, the national corps of top college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools in low-income communities.
Meerkins is a 2006 graduate of Ellsworth High School, 2010 graduate of UW-Madison and will teach in Greater New Orleans beginning this fall.

Ellsworth High School fourth quarter fitness winners have been announced. Physical education award winners are those students who achieved 85 percent on four of the five fitness tests. Seniors were: Jordan Fischer and Dylan Greske. Juniors were: Heather Krause and Zachary Riester. Freshmen were: Katie Deiss, Kennedy Kowalchyk, Amber Mamber and Austin Welch.
