Roger Nelson's field of ice formations appears on a Salem Township road like a lunar landscape set down in the heart of middle America. More than two dozen 15 to 20-foot high ice structures, some mounded like robust Christmas trees encased in ice, others in rows of jagged mountain peaks, fill the rural Pierce County field. Looming over all is a 35-foot tall ice creature with icicles dripping from his outspread arms.
