The Elmwood High School baseball team and the Elmwood/Plum City prep softball co-op have put themselves in position to win their respective Dunn-St. Croix Conference titles with important games against Alma/Pepin Thursday.
Trailing 3-0 after the top of the third inning, Ellsworth turned it on in the middle innings, scoring seven straight runs on the way to a 7-4 Middle Border Conference victory over Somerset Thursday in Hager City.
Spring Valley and Plum City prep baseball teams began their 2013 seasons Thursday with a doubleheader in Pepin and Elmwood was to travel to Independence Friday for its season opener. Both SV and Elmwood are defending league champions.
The shortened 2013 spring prep sports season calls for experienced teams and athletes to make up the difference in lack of games. Well, the Ellsworth High School baseball team has such experience in spades this spring and will use it to their advantage.
The long wait to play this spring didn’t impact Ellsworth’s Isaac Hines Tuesday at home against Baldwin-Woodville. Hines was spot on as the Panthers’ starting pitcher, striking out five of the first six batters he faced and throwing a five-inning shutout as Ellsworth defeated the Blackhawks 10-0 in five innings at Brown Sports Complex.
