Schachtner defeats Jarchow in special election

Letter: In his view, all laws should conform to constitution, he says

TO THE EDITOR: I was glad to see the Herald published my question on open carry of firearms for the two candidates who were running for Pierce County DA's office to answer.

Open carry is not constitutional carry because of restrictions imposed by law as to where one can carry his gun. In my view, all laws should conform to the constitution. It has not always been the case because some of those who make laws have no understanding of our founding document and, in some cases, others who do purposely write laws contrary to it.

We have a great ideological battle brewing regarding our second amendment. Emotions are running high because families lost their precious children in Newtown. Also, other mass murders have occurred recently.

One thing they have in common is they occurred in gun-free zones by maniacs on the loose. The emotional response so far has been to spew vitriolic hate by a group of people at citizens who happily abide by the extreme restrictive gun laws.

This rabid group also desires to use barbaric methods like the Muslim jihadists to exterminate these law-abiding citizens. They have used every method to make them look evil because they have a gun on their hip. Unfortunately, 90 percent of these people belong to the Democratic Party and the rest are Republicans in name only who would like to do away with the constitution.

Lady Justice is blindfolded for a reason. The justice system is to have no ideological bent or party affiliation. Our new DA's statement in the Herald perturbs me because what he said: "he announced his candidacy as a Democrat because he felt that party was most in sync with his own ideology." That spells trouble, in my opinion.

I sure hope he upholds the constitution.
