Schachtner defeats Jarchow in special election

Letter: He gives kudos to supervisors who opposed pay increases

TO THE EDITOR: Fiscal discipline doesn't seem to be the motto for the Pierce County Board.

At a time when social security recipients did not get any raise this year and will not again next year, the county board raises our property taxes over seven percent and gives 52 non-union county department heads, managers and supervisors a 2.5 percent increase.

Their weak excuse for the pay increases, as reported in the paper and quoting board member Jerry Kosin, "it's only fair to give managers raises comparable to those negotiated with the union." To make things worse, Chairman Paul Barkla had to take a personal shot at one member who had the guts to vote against the increases.

Kudos to the three supervisors who voted no to the pay increases, we need more like them on the board.
