BC Legionnaires make ex-church their home

BAY CITY--For the first time in the Bay City American Legion Post's 64-year history, local Legionnaires aren't heading to the village hall for their meetings.

The Post has moved to the former United Methodist Church and hosted its first community event there late last month. Mahn Funeral Home of Red Wing held a veterans' appreciation gathering at the site, according to Commander Ray Pechacek and Legionnaire Bob Stroupe.

"We had nearly 50 people here," Stroupe said Friday, noting the attendees were served lunch.

Pechacek said a crew comprised of Legion members will cook for the next public event, the Post's annual chicken feed, set for Saturday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m.

"We used to deep fry the chicken, but this year we're going to make it outside on the grill," he said.
