Film maker puts skills to use as Plum City High School play director

PLUM CITY--Michael Butt is a play director and substitute teacher by day, and an independent film maker and videographer by night.

Butt dreams of making old-fashioned films and has already produced some. Meantime, he needs a more stable livelihood, so thought he'd try following in the footsteps of others in his family.

"My dad and my brother are teachers, and my grandfather was, too," said the son of Daniel and Donna, all still living on the small home farm where he grew up between Plum City and Ellsworth, and brother of Jed, now of Turtle Lake.

Although his schooling emphasis wasn't education, Butt inquired to the school district he had once attended himself about being a substitute teacher there, he said Thursday. In Wisconsin, a specific degree as an educator isn't required, he explained.

Not only were Plum City school officials interested in having him substitute teach, but wondered when he arrived for an interview whether he wanted to direct the high school play as well, he said. The director was leading a 15-member cast this week in practices for "Just Another High School Play," to be presented Friday-Sunday, April 12-14, at Plum City Elementary School.
