It's almost time to get growing, find the best and newest tips for vegetable gardens

If you grow your own vegetables, you can grow varieties you like, you know what was used to grow them, and you get some great fun and exercise in the process!

Plus, it helps your grocery budget as you produce your own healthy, nutritious, fresh and great-tasting vegetables. No matter how much space you have, you can grow some of your own food.

UW-Extension is presenting a class to help home vegetable growers be more successful -- the class will cover the basics of vegetable gardening, including what the various types of crops need to grow well and how to avoid common pest and disease problems. Weed control, soil health, fertilizing, watering and harvesting will also be covered.

Beyond the traditional in-ground vegetable garden, the class will also present a variety of alternative methods for growing vegetables, including the basics of lasagna gardening, straw bale gardening and container gardening.

Anyone can grow some of their own food, and with the growing season about to begin, it's time to plan and be prepared for a successful and productive garden.

The class will be held at the River Falls Public Library on Tuesday, April 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class is free, but pre-registration is required due to limited room size. To register for the class, call the Pierce County UW-Extension office at (715) 273-6781.
