Pastor Todd Spieker arrived at Bethel Covenant Church, southwest of Ellsworth on CTH KK, just in time for the holiday season.

After a special installation service for him a week ago Sunday, Spieker was preparing for two Sundays of Advent, then Christmas, he said Friday.

“Then, I can get settled down,” he said about entering his first non-internship position as a pastor.

Thinking ahead, he’d like to broaden interest in a church with a congregation presently numbering approximately 70-85 people, he said. He’s already seen glimpses of the possibilities, at the church’s Christmas program a week ago Saturday when the building was filled and during a weekly youth ministry attended by students from “all over.”

“I’m finding ways to reach out into the community,” he said, “sharing the love of Christ.”

Next up for special events is the church’s Christmas Eve service, to be held next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., he said. Last week, he was still getting ready for the candlelight service.

The Karl Springs, Colo., native said he grew up in a church plant. The minister there had a great influence on him and a mission trip to Omaha, Neb., in which he participated at age 16 proved memorable.

“We were with Sudanese refugees,” he said.

When it came time for him to study, it was a matter of choosing something he liked, Spieker said. Biblical studies were a favorite and he ended up majoring in it, which meant he was on track toward the ministry.

“I felt God calling,” he said.

The son of Jon and Faye Spieker has a father who worked in software development for Verizon, he said. His brother, Adam, is presently in college at North Park University on Chicago’s north side, the same school he attended as a seminary undergrad in 2009. But first, he went to Covenant Bible College in Denver in 2005-06, where he met his then-future wife, Erin.

“We interned in a co-youth ministry at Mankato (Minn.) in 2009-10,” he said, noting ’09 was also the year they were married.
