Elmwood School Board approves levy

ELMWOOD--The Elmwood School Board approved the 2012-13 levy during a recent meeting.

The levy was set at $2,022,176, an increase of nearly $99,000 from the September annual meeting; however, it is a decrease of $252,000 from the previous year.

Superintendent Paul Blanford explained the numbers. The increase from the September meeting to the levy approval was due to an increase of 16 students from 2011-12, as district officials used more conservative numbers previously.

The decrease, he stated, was due to the aid percentage increase from the state. Because Elmwood had a previous surplus in last year's budget, along with last year's cash defeasance of that surplus, the district had a spending increase last year which, in turn, led to more aid from the state for 2012-13 than in a lower tax levy.

"A very unique situation, but a positive one for Elmwood," he added.

Blanford also said the mill rate dropped due to the total land valuation declining as well.

"Bottom line is that people will see a decrease in the total amount of taxes they will pay, unless their land value went up significantly," he said.

The school board announced they have asked Rusk Prairie Consulting of Menomonie to assist them in the strategic planning process.

"We are solid financially and otherwise," Blanford said. "However, we would like to plan for the future rather than the future tell us what we have to do."

The board approved Roni Leslie as a special education aide and Brittany Peterson as the school nurse. Peterson has a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and has previously interned in Elmwood. She will work two half-days per week.

The board accepted American Fence of Chippewa Falls' bid of $5,544 to replace the baseball field backstop fence.
