State cheese production continues to increase

For the first time in a while, Wisconsin cheese makers did not keep up with the national output in April - but they still extended the Badger State's Number-One status over second-place California.

New federal figures show that Wisconsin pumped out almost $232-million pounds of cheese in April, 2.6 percent more than in the same month a year ago. The national increase was 3.2 percent - a nice recovery after a decline in March of two-tenths-of-a-percent.

California stepped up its cheese output, but by a smaller percentage than Wisconsin. The Golden State made 193-million pounds of cheese in April, an increase of 2.2 percent from the previous year. Wisconsin had increases in American and Italian cheeses, and a decline in cheddar.
