Ellsworth man charged with battery of a police officer

An Ellsworth man was charged Wednesday in Pierce County Circuit Court with battery of a police officer, a Class H felony, that brings a maximum penalty of $10,000 dollars and/or six years prison if found guilty.

James E. Peterson, 75, 200 N. Northview, will make his first court appearance on the charge 10:30 a.m. March 23 for a preliminary hearing.

According to the criminal complaint, Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Jean Spletstoser went to visit a tenant of Peterson's on Feb. 15. The tenant was claiming that Peterson stopped by the farm that the tenant was living in and yelled at him about neglecting Peterson's horses on the farm.

The tenant was also allegedly claiming that Peterson yelled obscenities at him, called him an idiot, that he deserved to be locked up and that he wasn't fit to live. The tenant also stated that Peterson told him to be off the property "or else."

The tenant showed Spletstoser, who is the Sheriff's Department humane officer, the horses and see if in her opinion if they're being neglected. She said in her report that the barn was clean along with all the stalls and that "there were no signs of neglect on any of the horses."

Spletstoser went to Peterson's residence two days later to get his side of the story. When initially asked about the incident, Peterson responded with "I don't know what you're talking about." When she explained the situation, he replied that the tenant was going to get locked up and that the tenant was having a breakdown. He further added that he didn't yell at the tenant and that he was trying to get him help for his problems.
