Filkins and the Four Panthers onwards to semifinals
MADISON - Prescott's Jake Filkins and four Ellsworth wrestlers will be Pierce County's contribution to the semifinals of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Division 2.
These five wrestlers advanced with wins in Friday morning's quarterfinal sesssion.
Filkins stayed undefeated, improving to 35-0 with a 16-0 technical fall in 4:20 over Brad LeClair of Two Rivers at 189 pounds. Filkins scored the first points for Prescott in the tournament with his first takedown.
Ellsworth will have four semifinalists and place winners in this year's state meet. Sam Huppert blocked a taekdown by Austin Benish of Sturgeon Bay-Sevastopol and held on for a 3-2 win at 119. D.J. Yarwood jumped out to a 6-1 lead on Luxemburg-Casco's Joe Mercier and won 6-2 at 119. Hayden Hauschildt didn't score a lot of points but was still in control of Southern Door's Cody Seuss on his way to a 6-0 win at 145 and Shawn Helmueller scored five back points while riding out Lakeside Lutheran's Tyler Zimmerman in the second period and won 10-2 at 152.
Tonight's semifinal match-ups, which begin at 7 p.m., have Huppert against Clinton's Daniel Bahn (37-6); Yarwood will face Jacob Volkey (40-6) of Adams-Friendship; Hauschildt squares off against undefeated (39-0) Kalvin York of Sugar River; Helmueller wrestles David Phillips of Pewaukee (47-3)' and Filkins faces Josh Mohr of Pewaukee (44-5).
Two Pierce County wrestlers were eliminated today from the tournament. Prescott's Mike Feriancek was shutout 5-0 in the quarterfinals by West De Pere's Mark Puckhaber at 135. He had a stronger effort against Oconto Falls' Aaron Heiderscheid in the consolation round. He led 2-0 in the first peroid and was tied with Heidersheid 3-3 in the third. But Feriancek gave Heiderscheid an escape to start the third period and coulnd't get the takedown he needed to win the match and lost 6-3.
Ellsworth's Jordan Borst lost 8-1 to Mishicot's T.J. Kinjerski in the quarterfinals at 171 and fell in the consolation round to Belmont-Platteville's Dusty Jentz 5-1.
