MADISON - The Ellsworth High School wrestling team broke new ground Friday when they placed four wrestlers in the Division 2 finals at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

Hayden Hauschildt will be back to defend his state title. He defeated Sugar River Co-op's previously unbeaten Kalvin York 8-5 at 145 pounds in Division 2. Sam Huppert will be back to the finals as well, looking to win his first state championship after beating Daniel Bahn of Clinton 4-3 at 112.

New finalists for the Panthers are D.J. Yarwood at 119 and Shawn Helmueller at 152. Yarwood won 4-3 over Adams-Friendship's Jacob Volkey at 112 and Helmueller beat Pewaukee's David Phillips 3-2.

In all of these semifinal matches, Panther wrestlers were able to score key points in the third period to either break ties or make come-from-behind points to win.

Huppert scored a takedown at the edge of the mat on Clinton's Daniel Bahn to turnaround a 4-3 deficit, although problems with the scoreboard in this match made it difficult to know what was going on. Yarwood scored a similar takedown on Volkey in the closing seconds to get past a 3-2 lead for Volkey. Hauschildt scored an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall all in the third period to get past York and Helmueller suprised Phillips' with sudden takedown that put him ahead 3-1 in the third.

"I could feel him leaning on his left foot and lunging whenever he moved forward so I felt I could shoot low at him whenever he lunged," Helmueller said.

Ellsworth head coach Jack Radabaugh is excited at the opportunity of coaching four finalists for the first time.

"You can't help but be excited when not only are the kids winning but they are winning the close matches." Radabaugh said.

Prescott's Jake Filkins was unable to make it five for Pierce County in the finals as he lost his first match of the season to Pewaukee's Josh Mohr by a 7-5 score in the 189-pound semifinals. Filkins led 4-2 in the second after a reversal but he gave up a reversal and two nearfall points in the third.

Huppert will take on Bloomer's Jordan Poirier (43-5) in a re-match of the sectional final. Yarwood faces one of the top wrestlers in the state in Cuba City-Southwestern's Jarod Donar (45-0). Hauschildt takes on Justin Washburn (27-5) of Iowa-Grant/Highland and Helmueller has a tough opponent in Lodi's Logan Einerson (46-1).

The finals will begin at 6 p.m. in the Kohl Center.

Filkins will wrestle Oconto's Ben Ruechel in the consolation bracket's Saturday morning.
