Hauschildt pins for his second straight title, three Panthers second

Hayden Hauschildt lowers the chin for the pin of Iowa-Grant/Highland's Justin Washburn.

MADISON - Hayden Hauschildt joins the pantheon of Ellsworth High School two-time state wrestling champions as he pinned Iowa-Grant/Highland's Justin Washburn in 3:13 Saturday evening at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament.

Hauschildt won the 145-pound, Division 2 championship. Last year he was the 135-pound champion.

Other two-time champs for the Panthers are Rick Langer (1973-74), Gary Langer (1979-80) and Mark Matzek (1999-00).

Hauschildt went up 4-1 in the first period on two takedowns and knew getting a pin in the state finals was a strong possibility.

"I could smell blood when I was able to take him down twice in the first period," Hauschildt said.

After the second takedown Hauschildt nearly pinned Washburn in the first period but Washburn was saved by the buzzer.

Hauschildt's title was the only one of four the Panthers claimed on Championship Saturday. Ellsworth had four wrestlers in the finals.

Sam Huppert was state runner-up again, falling to Bloomer's Jordan Poirer 7-3 at 112. D.J. Yarwood lost to Jared Donar of Cuba City-Southwestern by the same 7-3 score at 119. Shawn Helmueller was pinned in 1:55 by Logan Einerson of Lodi at 152.
