Plum City-Mondovi spikers clash for first place in D-SC tonight

Marah Boyers tries to slam a spike at an Elmwood player.

A piece of first place in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference is on the line Thursday night as Plum City High School's volleyball team travels to Mondovi for 7 p.m. match. Both teams are 3-0 in the D-SC.

Colfax is only other team in the D-SC undefeated so far at 3-0. The Buffs' have a 19-1 overall record, their only loss being a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bloomer. Plum City is 10-15 overall.

Both teams are coming into Thursday's match off of Tuesday sweeps, Mondovi over Pepin and PC over Glenwood City. And both teams have already played each other this season. The Buffaloes swept the Blue Devils at a quad meet in Mondovi back on Sept. 9 by scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-11.

PC head coach Nanette Murray said Mondovi plays very good defense.

"They're a scrappy team on defense and they don't give up points easily, perhaps more so than in the recent past," Murray said. "But they still have their share of good hitters too so we have to match-up with them at the net and our passing has to be very good tonight."

Hailey Froelich leads Mondovi in scoring with 20 kills. Kaitlynn Dregney has a team-high 26 digs along with five aces. Morgan Bloom is Mondovi's setter and she has 28 assists so far.

Plum City has relied on good serving to carry them in conference play so far. Mondovi is notorious for the low ceiling in its gymnasium affecting opposing team servers but Murray said that shouldn't be a problem for her squad.

"We usually serve low and hard, none of our kids have really high-arching serves so it shouldn't be a problem for us."

Other prep volleyball games involving Pierce County teams include Ellsworth hosting a key MBC match against Baldwin-Woodville, Prescott at Osceola; Elmwood hosting Boyceville and Spring Valley at Pepin.
