Ellsworth moves through five to semis, Webb also wins

Zac Reister lifts off Richland Center's Loagan Schmidt.

MADISON - It was another successful round for the Ellsworth High School wrestling team. The Panthers have five wrestlers competing in the semifinals of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb is also in the semis.

The Panthers' Jens Lantz made it at 103 pounds he shutout Sheboygan Falls' Alex Fitzgerald 11-4. Roarke Langer was just as stingy as he beat Freedom's Devin Bera by a 9-1 score at 125. D.J. Yarwood started strong and held on for a 9-6 win over Mosinee's Jordan Roosa at 140. Levi Kuesel topped Thurston Schuster 5-3 at 152 and Parker Hines major decisioned Valders' Austin Shillcox 13-5.

"From the scores it appears we were good on defense" EHS head coach Jack Radabaugh said. "But that's due to the fact we were so active on offense. If you moving and scoring more than your opponent, it's hard for him to do so."

Yarwood nearly got caught with a trick move by Rooosa which led to five points in the down position and cut his lead to 8-6. But Yarwood scored an escape and held on for the win.

"It's a move you don't see a lot of so he wasn't looking out for it," Radabaugh said. "But give him credit for panicking. He knew where he was and what the situation was and just kept moving. You can see how his experience here (this is Yarwood's fourth state meet)helps him."

Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb will be competing in the Division 3, 112-pound semis after beating Peshtigo's Josh Bayer 8-2.

The semifinal match-ups pit Lantz against Cuba City-Southwestern's J.J. Donar (46-2); Webb will take on Mineral Point's Devin Walrack (33-7); Langer faces Luxemburg-Casco's Zach Skarda (38-11); Yarwood faces River Valley's Seth Liegel (39-2); Kuesel is against Jackson Fox of Wrightstown (40-7)and Hines will square up with Freedom's Ben Beyer (38-9).

Ellsworth's Zac Reister lost to Plainfield Tri-County/Almond-Bancroft's Brandon Clapper 8-3 in the 215-pound quarterfinals which left him very distraught. But he came back to beat Richland Center's Logan Schmidt 5-1 and has assured himself a place on the awards stand.

"I have to hand it to the coaches to put me in the right frame of mind for the match," Reister said.

Reister scored the first takedown by ducking in-between Schmidt's legs.

"I just did it naturally," Reister said. "It's a little unusual but he started getting sloppy and the opening was there and I took it."

Ellsworth Tanner Eggenberger was eliminated from the tournament by losing 3-0 to L-C's Zak Peters in the 160-pound quarterfinals and then losing 3-1 to Jamey Simmons of Abbotsford-Colby.
