Eau Claire police warn of internet scam after bust

EAU CLAIRE - Eau Claire police say they want to make the public aware of the threat of Internet scams. Last week, police confiscated $716,000 thousand dollars in fake checks and money orders in a single home.

It isn't usual for authorities to release details of ongoing investigations, but police say people need to know about this fraud scheme. No arrests have been made yet, but investigators say they do have a suspect.

Police say a common scam involves the bad guys overpaying for items bought on a website like Craigslist. They contact the victim, asking the difference be refunded, sometimes even suggesting the victim keep some of the extra payments. By the time the bank can check the validity of the fraudulent checks and money orders, it is too late and the victim is out the money they sent the crook.
