Gopher men's hoops beats BSU in exhibition game

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota star forward Trevor Mbakwe of St. Paul scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 71-58 exhibition win over Bemidji State last night at Williams Arena.

Ralph Sampson III added 15 points, while Rodney Williams chipped in with ten for the victors. Bemidji State's David Berthene of Lakeville led all scorers with 21 points, connecting on five three-point baskets.

Minnesota jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Beavers rallied to trim it to 12-8. The Gophers led at halftime 30-21, but Bemidji State hung around, getting to within seven points at 47-40. The Gophers kept the Beavers at bay the rest of the way and held on to win.

Minnesota hosts Augustana on Monday night.
