A critical turnover and missed free-throws meant a third straight loss for Ellsworth High school's girls basketball team Friday.

The Panthers lost in overtime to New Richmond 44-42 in their first Middle Border Conference game of the season.

Ellsworth trailed at halftime 19-17 and again at the end of the third quarter 31-28. But Ellsworth's defense held the Tigers (1-2 overall and 1-0 in the MBC) scoreless until the 3:06 mark of the fourth quarter. The Panthers used this drought to eventually take the lead at several point throughout the final quarter.

"We backed away from man-to-man and packed in our zone because they were struggling shooting the ball from the outside," Ellsworth head coach Dave Berg said. "Their shooting plus the fact we battled hard on defense and in rebounding put us in position to win."

But Ellsworth couldn't put New Richmond away as poor free-throw shooting hurt them throughout the contest. The Panthers made just 7-of-20 from the line and it allowed NR to tie the game at the end of regulation 39-39. A pair of missed free throws plus the turnover gave the Tigers where the Tigers took the lead on a Sydney Kannel jumper plus two made free-throws. Kannel finished with a team-high 14 points.

The Panthers Lydia Kuhl led all scorers with 18 points. Teammates Abbey Ristow and Halle Hatch finished with 11 and eight points respectively. But New Richmond had more balance on offense with six players scored points to Ellsworth's five and each of them scoring four points or more.

Ellsworth drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. They host rival River Falls on Tuesday.
