Ramsey County trying to get back into Vikings stadium picture

ST. PAUL -- Ramsey County backers are trying to get their plan for a Vikings stadium back on lawmakers' radar screen as a downtown Minneapolis plan falters.

Ramsey County Commissioner Tony Bennett says the Arden Hills site was "never out of the picture." Dayton administration officials say they're still trying to get a Minneapolis plan done with the legislature poised to adjourn possibly as soon as the end of next week.

There's a hearing tonight on a backup electronic pulltabs bill, which stadium backers are eyeing as a vehicle to move their plan forward as the legislative clock ticks down.

Meanwhile a phone call is reportedly scheduled today between Governor Mark Dayton and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell -- to talk about where the Vikings stadium issue stands. According to, Goodell warned Dayton Wednesday that there would be "serious consequences" for the Vikings if a stadium bill is not signed. Earlier this week, a House committee voted down the latest plan for a new stadium near the Metrodome in Minneapolis. That makes chances slim that a new bill will get passed in the current legilislative session, which is due to end soon.

The Cleveland Browns are covering all of their basis for the upcoming NFL Draft. According to "The Plain Dealer" Cleveland conducted a private workout with USC offensive-tackle Matt Kalil. Kalil is expected by many to go number-three to the Minnesota Vikings. With Joe Thomas already in the fold at left tackle, Kalil would have to play right tackle for the Browns.

Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel is on the trade block. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Samuel is being shopped ahead of next week's NFL Draft. The nine-year veteran has led the NFC in interceptions two of the last three seasons and has 45 career picks. Samuel is due to make $9.9-million this season.
