Fugitive arrested after jumping off Eisenhower Bridge

RED WING - What started as a relatively routine traffic stop ended with a man being arrested after jumping in the river from the Eisenhower Bridge early Thursday morning.

At 1:55 a.m., Red Wing police tried to stop Daniel Donno, 38, of Welch, on Highway 61 near Green Spring Road for speeding and driving conduct, Police Chief Tim Sletten said.

Donno stopped, but after the officer got out to approach the vehicle, the suspect drove away. It set off a pursuit as Donno headed north on Highway 61, turned on to County Road 18, into Prairie Island, and eventually back on to Highway 61 heading toward Red Wing.

Attempts to stop the vehicle, including with tire deflation devices, were unsuccessful, Sletten said.

After driving to Bay Point Park and downtown Red Wing, Donno led authorities to the Highway 63 bridge into Wisconsin. He slowed down on the bridge and turned around, but then got out of the vehicle and jumped into the river.

Goodhue County water patrol was called in, and it took two boats to trap and apprehend Donno. He was arrested and booked in for vehicle theft, fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, disobeying a stop sign and speeding.

The vehicle Donno was driving was stolen from Carl Hemphill, 2906 Lake St., between 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 1:55 a.m. Thursday morning, Sletten said.

Red Wing police were assisted by Dakota County Sheriff, Pierce County Sherriff and Prairie Island tribal police throughout the incident.
