They say timing is everything and for Pierce County Fair organizers, the 2012 edition illustrated that adage perfectly.

After the hottest July on record, the Fair weekend was the first in weeks this area saw calm and cool weather for an extended period of time and people took advantage.

"Great weather equals great attendance," Fair coordinator Ann Webb said. "And it showed with record gates on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then, overall."

In addition, an out-of-state Fairgoer from Utah commented to Webb, "This is the Cadillac of County Fairs". "Our Fair theme of 'The Four Best Days of Summer' played out like we hoped it would," she said.

One of the notable changes for the 2012 edition was the change in the Grandstand schedule. Webb said the results paid off.

"People seemed to enjoy the Horse Pull on Thursday night," she said. "The tractor pull had increased participation and the Demo Derby was sold out."

Another switch was moving Veteran's Day to Sunday to accommodate the newest Veterans who work Monday through Friday.

Next year's Fair is scheduled for August 8-11, 2013 and it will be the 130th annual. Webb said the occasion will be commemorated, but it's too early to comment on what.

Fairgoers next year will also notice a new building next year for exhibits. Maintenance Supervisor Scott Walker said the building will be constructed next to the Seyforth Building with ground breaking set for the fall.

"We are hoping to have as much as possible done by winter," Walker said. The rest of the time the new building will be for storage.
