UW hoops teams lose in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games
Both the University of Wisconsin basketball teams were beaten in their respective ACC/Big Ten Challenge Games Wednesday.
The Wisconsin men did not shoot a free throw in the first 34-and-a-half minutes of their 60-54 home loss to Virginia last night in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The Cavaliers - coached by former Badgers' assistant Tony Bennett - totally had their way with Bo Ryan's squad. Virginia outshot Wisconsin 46-to-38 percent, and they out-rebounded the Badgers 36-25. Ryan said Virginia forwards Akil Mitchell and Darion Atkins willed their team to a victory. Those two combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds. Joe Harris led Virginia with 22 points - just one less than the entire Badger team scored in the first half. Wisconsin fought back in the second half, as it went up by five. But the Cavaliers responded with a 12-2 run, and the Badgers never got closer than three the rest of the way. Ben Brust led Wisconsin with 15 points. The Cavaliers won their fourth straight and improved to 5-2. The Badgers have dropped 2-of-3, and are now 4-and-3. They'll host California on Sunday.
The Wisconsin women scored only six points in the final nine minutes last night, as they lost at Virginia Tech 47-to-38 in their Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The Badgers were up by nine with 11:22 to play. But the Hokies then scored 11 unanswered points, as Wisconsin made a dismal 8-of-29 shots in the second half. Virginia Tech outshot the Badgers 35-to-30 percent for the game, and the Hokies had a 36-30 rebounding edge. The 38 points were a season low for Wisconsin. Morgan Paige scored 12, as the Badgers fell to 3-3 on the young season. Monet Tellier led all scorers with 17. She hit all nine of her free throws, as Virginia Tech improved to 3-2. The Badgers played without their second-leading scorer, Taylor Wurtz. She did not make the trip due to a back injury. Wisconsin will host Alabama on Saturday.
