Minnesota Hockey News: Huskies make first Frozen Four
TOLEDO - The St. Cloud State Huskies have advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in program history.
The Huskies skated by Miami of Ohio 4-1 yesterday in Toledo to earn the trip to college hockey's coveted showcase event. St. Cloud State freshman Joey Benik of Andover scored two the first two goals in yesterday's win, while junior forward Cory Thorson of Crystal netted the final two goals. The Huskies are now 25-15-and-1 and will face top-seed Quinnipiac in the national semfinals. The other semifinal pits Massachusetts-Lowell against Yale. The NCAA Frozen Four begins April 11th in Pittsburgh.
Minnesota State lost its NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal contest to Miami on Saturday.
The Minnesota Wild host the St. Louis Blues tonight at The Xcel Energy Center. The Wild have won eight of their last nine contests to move to 21-11-and-2 on the season. The Blues are 17-14-and-2 overall. The Blues won the first game of the season series 5-4 in overtime on January 27th.
When the Blues play in St. Paul tonight, a familiar face will be wearing the St. Louis sweater for the first time. The Blues acquired Golden Valley native Jordan Leopold from the Buffalo Sabres in a Saturday trade. The Sabres send the Blues a second round and fifth round selection in this season's draft. The 30-year-old blueliner registered two goals and six assists in 24 games for the Sabres this season. In 610 games over 10 seasons, Leopold has totaled 65 goals and 202 points. Leopold is a former Golden Gopher player who helped Minnesota to a national title in 2002.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely after surgery Saturday night for a broken jaw. Crosby also had major dental work done after taking a deflected puck to the mouth in the team's 2-0 win over the New York Islanders. He did not need to have his jaw wired, although he did lose a few teeth. Crosby leads the team in scoring with 15 goals and 41 points this season. The Penguins have won 15 in-a-row. They host the Buffalo Sabers tomorrow. Crosby played prep hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault.
