Group opposes aerial spraying of manure

The Sustain Rural Wisconsin Network says aerial manure spreading creates health risks. That's why the group opposed to big industrial farms is pushing for a model ordinance which local governments can use to put limits on the practice.

Members say aerial spraying can put bacteria and other pathogens from untreated manure into the air. Strong winds can make the risk ever greater. There is opposition to the idea.

DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp and Agriculture Secretary Ben Brancel are asking the Wisconsin Towns Association and Wisconsin Counties Association to wait until there is a proven risk. Estimates are a half-dozen farms in the state use aerial systems now.
