Afternoon State Sports Briefs: Draft continues for Packers
NEW YORK CITY - The NFL Draft continues tonight with rounds two and three. Last night, the Green Bay Packers selected UCLA defensive end Datone Jones in the first round with the 26th overall selection.
The 6-4, 280 pound Jones tallied 6.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss last season. Jones is expected to be a big part of the Packers youth movement on the defensive line, and is considered to be versatile enough to line up at multiple positions. Rounds 2-3 will be held tonight, with rounds 4-7 held on Saturday.
The San Diego Chargers have put in a waiver claim on former Packers linebacker D.J. Smith, who was cut loose by Green Bay on Wednesday. Smith is recovering from a torn ACL suffered against the Houston Texans last October.
After being idle last night, the Milwaukee Brewers open up a three-game weekend series in Los Angeles tonight against the Dodgers. The Brewers nine-game winning streak was snapped Wednesday night in San Diego. Rookie Hiram Burgos will start for Milwaukee against veteran Josh Beckett.
Elle Magazine has written a lengthy piece about the shocking revelations about former Wisconsin track and field star Suzy Favor-Hamilton, entitled "Crash of the Titan." The article details Favor-Hamilton's periods of what is described as "gross doubt and insecurity" which led her to become a high-priced Las Vegas prostitute. Favor-Hamilton, who still lives in Madison, says her work as a call girl was linked to her ongoing battle with depression.
The Milwaukee Admirals and Texas Stars kick-off their best-of-five Western Conference Quarterfinal match-up tonight at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center. The two teams will battle again on Saturday night at 7:00 as well before shifting to Austin for Game 3 and, if necessary, games four and five. The series is also a rematch of the Western Conference Quarterfinals from 2011 when the Ads beat Texas 4-2.
