Holiday for most, day to remember for Ellsworth Legionnaires

That the Ellsworth American Legion Post was named after the first local veteran in World War I and the first in World War II to die is fitting.

Whether it's Kinne, for whom the Post was originally called, or Englehart, whose name was added later, or the many who've made the ultimate sacrifice since, Legionnaires here never lose sight of them.

Memorial Day is an occasion when these brave men and women are uppermost in local Legion members' thoughts. They're always up early that day to participate in a program that begins with ceremonies at area cemeteries.

"We've always gone to the cemeteries," Post Historian Jerry Christiansen said Thursday, noting he's been part of the program for at least 30 years and speculating the tradition probably dates farther back. After all, the Ellsworth Post was chartered in 1921.
