Improvements to lift bridge almost complete
STILLWATER - Improvements are almost finished on the Stillwater Lift Bridge between Stillwater and Houlton.
Officials say the lift span will stay down on Tuesday between 8 a.m. and noon, while a gearbox is replaced. It's the last major step in a repair project that's been going on since last summer.
Minnesota's DOT has been working on a three-to-four-million-dollar upgrade that improves various components of the 80-year-old lift bridge, plus replacements of curbs, gutters, and guard-rails.
Officials said the work was needed to keep the bridge in good shape until a new four-lane bridge opens in 2016 over the Saint Croix River between Stillwater and Hudson.
