Safest May since World War II on state highways

Last month was the safest May on Wisconsin highways since World War II.

The state Department of Transportation said 47 people were killed in traffic accidents last month, the fewest for May since 33 lost their lives in 1945.

It was also 16 fewer than the same month a year ago.

Officials say the high fuel prices continue to have people driving less and slower.

They also credit tighter enforcement and more seat belt use.

For the first five months of the year, 199 people were killed in Wisconsin crashes. That's 79 fewer than the same period a year ago.
