City girl gets acquainted with country fair as intern

Working with people is what’s important to Stephanie Becker.

And this River Falls native has had a chance to do just that in a couple of capacities for the Pierce County Fair. The city girl doesn’t bring direct experience with the fair to either of the related jobs she’s held, but is learning.

“I was a ticket taker at the gates last August,” Becker said Friday, explaining that’s how she heard about the fair intern position she holds this summer.

Since early this month, she’s kept busy at the fair office, entering into a computer a lot of open class and junior class entries. The deadline for such entries was Thursday; she agreed she’d gotten very familiar with this year’s fair book by then.

Becker understood she’ll also be responsible for some office upkeep and making signs and posters, plus has had contacts with 4-H leaders. Her internship to date has been on a four-day-a-week schedule, increasing to five-days-a-week next month.

“By the end of July, I’ll be working six days a week,” she said, mindful the fair dates of Aug. 8-11 will be quite close by then and noting she expects to continue in the role until Aug. 24.

It will be just in time to return to classes at UW-Eau Claire for the fall, when she’ll be a college junior, said the philanthropy and fundraising coordinator for her dorm, Putnam Hall. She’s majoring in social work with an emphasis on sign language, and is considering a minor in political science. She looks to graduate in 2015.

“I hope to open my own counseling service someday,” she said.
