WISCONSIN NEWS BRIEFS: Protest over Martin-Zimmerman case in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - Hundreds of protesters gathered outside of the federal courthouse in Milwaukee yesterday, protesting the acquittal of George Zimmerman.

The protest was part of a national chain of rallies over the weekend, calling for “Justice for Trayvon Martin”. Protesters at the event say they demand federal civil rights charges be filed against Zimmerman and that changes are made to self-defense laws. 32 states, including Wisconsin, have some form of the stand-your-ground law.

A crash in Central Wisconsin claims the lives of two women. The Portage County Sheriff’s Department says the two women, 21-year-old Melissa Peterson and 21-year-old Stephanie Eberhardt, are both from Wisconsin Rapids. Authorities say they were in the back seat of a pickup truck, when it left the road and crashed into trees. The incident happened around 2:00 yesterday morning. Another passenger, a 21-year-old man, was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. The 22-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities have identified a boy who drowned in a river on Thursday. Police say eight-year-old Shane Needles, of Nashotah, was pulled from the Oconomowoc River by first responders who performed CPR on the boy. He later died at a nearby hospital. Police say Needles was with a group of people visiting Riverside Park when his chaperone noticed he went missing.
