MINNESOTA NEWS BRIEFS: Chemical tanker rollover near Hibbing Taconite

HIBBING, Minn. - A tanker truck carrying 45,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate rolled over on Highway 5 near the Hibbing Taconite plant this morning (Fri).

Officials say it appears the only thing leaking right now is hydraulic fluid from the tractor. Authorities are making arrangements with a private contractor to transfer the chemicals from the vehicle. The driver of the truck received minor injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. Sheriff's officials say there have been *no* evacuations and the scene is secure at this time.


The State Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle crash in Benton County last (Thurs) night that killed a woman from Princeton. Troopers say the 24-year-old driver crossed the centerline on Highway 95, went into the ditch and struck a tree. The woman died at the scene. Her name has not been released.


Authorities are starting to find out details of a murder-suicide near La Crosse this week. Autopsies show 18-year-old Dana Shefelbine of Holmen, Wisconsin was beaten and stabbed to death, and 22-year-old Jesse Klukas of Campbell shot himself. It happened Tuesday morning at an apartment on French Island, in the middle of the Mississippi between La Crosse and Dresbach. Media reports say Klukas wrote on Facebook how he killed his ex-girlfriend Shefelbine - and posted two photos soon after her murder. The page was taken off Facebook, and police said they’re using it as part of their investigation.


Searchers were out in force last night (Thurs) in Duluth but turned up no sign of a missing 74-year-old woman with dementia. Dale Gerard was last seen three weeks ago boarding a city bus. Officials say she slipped past security measures at her assisted living facility. Gerard is described as white, 5-5, 155 pounds, and was wearing dark pants, a flowered blouse and a pink sweater. Duluth residents are being asked to search their properties and buildings Anyone with information should contact Duluth police.


An arson investigation is under way and a woman is in custody after a house fire last (Thurs) night near Duluth. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says it appears the blaze in Normanna Township was started under suspicious circumstances. The female suspect was arrested and later hospitalized. The fire re-started early this (Fri) morning but was quickly extinguished. The residence suffered heavy fire and water damage and is believed to be a total loss.


Carver County authorities are searching for a woman who robbed a bank yesterday (Thurs) afternoon in Cologne. Sheriff Jim Olson says the female suspect gave a teller at Klein Bank a note demanding money. The teller then set some cash on the counter and the woman picked it up and fled. She did not show a weapon, but implied she had a firearm. The suspect is a white female, about five-foot eight in her early to mid-20's. She was wearing a black scarf, black sunglasses and a black blouse. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Carver County Sheriff's Office.
