12-foot apple pie part of Prescott Labor Day celebration

An 150-foot-bratwurst and Budweiser Clydesdales won't be the only attractions during the Labor Day celebration at Ptacek's IGA in Prescott.

The Prescott Lions will be serving up a 12-foot (in diameter) apple pie that will feed more than 1,500 people, explained Lions Club member Tom Thoen. The pie will be served directly across from Ptacek's on the property of the Prescott Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

"The Prescott Lions' Club 12-foot apple pie will be the largest produced in the state of Wisconsin," Thoen said. He noted the closest was in Galesville, which produced a 10-foot diameter pie for its annual Apple Affair.

The inspiration for the pie started when Herdie Baisden, owner of Maiden Rock Apple Orchard made the only offer for the 12-foot pans which were previously owned by the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association.

Thoen explained Baisden took advantage of the pans and asked any group who would listen -- university alumni groups, church groups, community support groups -- if they wanted to make a pie. When Baisden mentioned it to Ken Knight, Knight's eyes widened like a nine-inch pie. One thing led to another, Thoen said, and the Lions agreed to use the pans as a fundraiser.

Proceeds from the sale of pieces of pie will help support the Lions Club.

"The outreach of the community to serve this project has been overwhelming," Thoen said. "From the design and constructionof the custom-made oven by Randy Kinneman to the support of Cernohous Chevrolet, it has been awesome to cooperatively work with Ptacek's IGA." Thoen alson wanted to thank Brian Kemmer for the tent, Woodmasters Foundation for the lumber, and Joy Lutheran Church for the facilities and equipment.

Pie serving begins at 12 p.m. Thoen said first come, first serve.
