Pierce County Administrator could be named tonight

ELLSWORTH - A man who was Dodge County coordinator for nearly a decade and a Goodhue County Extension director may become Pierce County's new administrative coordinator.

Friday morning Pierce County's Finance and Personnel Committee recommended that the County Board hire Curt Kephart, Rochester, to fill the job left vacant since Mark Schroeder resigned last year.

The appointment now goes to the County Board, which will make the final decision. The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday evening.

The committee is recommending a starting salary of $65,000 plus a $1,000 allowance for relocation expenses. The committee is also recommending a $2,500 pay bump after six months if Kephart receives a favorable performance evaluation and another $2,500 increase in 12 months.

Kephart became Dodge County coordinator in March 1992. Dodge County has a population of about 18,000.

Early Friday afternoon, Pierce County Personnel Director Sandy Langer said Kephart hadn't had a chance to accept the offer and that she would release more information on him once he had made a decision.

Kephart worked recently as Extension director for Wabasha and Goodhue counties and as director of continuing education and grant development for Rochester Community and Technical College.

Earlier this month, the County Board declined to hire former St. Croix County Administrative Coordinator John Krizek, the first candidate recommended by the Finance and Personnel Committee.

The committee recommended starting Krizek at a salary of $72,000, increasing him to $75,000 after three months of favorable performance and to $78,000 after six months.

While Schroeder was designated as the chief administrative officer of the county, the job description was rewritten after he left. The new ordinance says the administrative coordinator will "coordinate" rather than "direct" administrative and management functions of the county government.

Schroeder was making $84,000 when he resigned.
