Beet can't be beat
Marlin Torseth of Hager City showed a five-and-a-half pound beet Friday he grew in his home garden. Torseth knew of no particular reason for this beet to be so large, but noted he's grown a lot of others in the pound- to pound-and-a-half range. He also grows tomatoes, squash, currants and other items in his one-eighth acre garden plot, keeping his wife busy with canning. Lately, he's experienced trouble with turkeys threatening his crops. Torseth said he's devoted much of his time to gardening since he retired as a Pierce County employee in 1995.
