Hager City Glass takes over former Standard building

HAGER CITY --- As Hager City Glass was starting to outgrow its space in the building across from Knutson Trucking, co-owners and brothers Cory and Ryan Dodge were faced with the question of where to go next.

Luckily, they didn't have to go far, as the former Standard building was unoccupied.

"We noticed it was for sale and it was a decent price," Cory said.

After some renovating and expansion, the brothers have been operating out of that building for the last few months. (The Standard building is located across from Hager Telecom.)

The history of the business dates back to 2000, as Cory started it after working under his father, Doug, in River Falls. Ryan joined two years later after graduating from Ellsworth High School, just like Cory.

"Growing up when we're kids, we never thought of going into business together," Ryan said. "It all kind of fell together."

The building now sits at 30x104 square feet, with the brothers adding on a 30x64 foot expansion.

"With the new location, we'll be able to keep more product on hand and have a faster turnaround," Ryan said.

Furthermore, once the finishing touches are done on the building, more of a showroom will be featured to highlight, for example, shower doors, specialty, colored and patterned glass, along with other residential products.

While residential brings in a good amount of business, by far, they said, commercial work (aluminum windows and doors) is their top seller. (Hager City Glass also does automobile and any other custom work.)

With the increased business space, the brothers are also excited about increasing their range for business. Right now, client area includes Pierce, Pepin and St. Croix counties in Wisconsin, along with Goodhue and Dakota counties in Minnesota.

"We're willing to travel further distances for commercial work," Cory said.

Both wanted to acknowledge various people for their help in the moving, construction and renovation: Rick Ellis from Cleary Builders, Glen Anderson from Anderson Excavating, Joe Plummer Concrete, Rick Schommer from R&R, Todd Schilling, parents Doug and Lori, and other friends.

"We received a lot of support and good words from the community," Ryan said. "A lot of people are happy to see something happen to the old building."

He further added an open house is planned for the spring.

Hager City Glass is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday with after hours and weekends by appointment. The phone number is 792-5560 and, because it's just Cory and Ryan, the two are usually out on appointments, so they said to leave a message and the call will be returned.
