Maiden Rock Post Office to host Passport Fair July 17

MAIDEN ROCK --- The Maiden Rock Post Office is offering a rare opportunity for area people on Tuesday, July 17.

From 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the post office will hold a passport fair, at which people among other things can either register for a new passport or get theirs updated.

Maiden Rock Postmaster Sharon Halverson explained the reason for sponsoring the fair was the post office wanted to do a public service. Also, the office wanted to make sure the schedule falls in line with the public's schedule (i.e., staying open during the lunch hour.)

To participate in the fair, Halverson said visitors need their original birth certificate with a state seal along with proof of identification, which can be either a driver's license, military identification or a student card.

The paperwork and photography will be provided.

"Basically, you'll be able to do everything that day," she said. The total cost, she mentioned, for those 16 and up will be $112, while 15 and under will be $97.

She further added that, if the paperwork is mailed via first class, it will take around eight-to-10 weeks to receive the passport.

A demand for passports is projected as, by January 2008, government regulations will require U.S. citizens to have a passport when traveling to Canada and Mexico by land; if traveling by air, it's already required.
