Property taxes, school funding discussed at community meeting

PRESCOTT - Over 80 people attended Monday's night community meeting at Prescott High School to discuss among other topics school funding, property taxes and economic development.

The question and answer session, which lasted over an hour, featured speakers State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf, Rep. Kitty Rhoades and Gov. Doyle's representative for the Northern region, Bryce Luchterhand.

School funding and property taxes dominated the session since the two are hand-in-hand. Prescott, like many school districts in this state, is in financial doubt and seeking a referendum.

"There has to be a general reorganization of school financing in the state of Wisconsin," Luchterhand said. "School funding is based almost solely on property values and state aid is attributed to property values. School funding has to be changed in the state."
