For one night, 'Grease' came to Bay City

BAY CITY -- A tradition at Flat Pennies Ice Cream in Bay City has been for the second Friday of each month to be Open Microphone Night.

On June 8, seven workers decided to take advantage of that, as they came together and did songs from the musical "Grease," along with a 'Flat Pennies' rap song.

"It was one of the best Friday nights we've had," said owner Jim Ross. He estimated about 30 people showed up that night.

Ross said that, going along with the train theme the business has had since opening four months ago, the workers instead of going by their real names, use hobo names while working.

The group performing that night (with their real first names in parenthesis) was Starchaser (Laura), Lunchbox (Kassi), Snapshot (Jessica), Tumbleweed (Alex), and Minnie (Allie). They're accompanied by Knucklehead (Justin Lewis) and Boxcar (Colin McMorrow).

The songs included "Summer Lovin," "You're the One That I Want" and "Grease Lightnin'."

"They had a lot of fun with it," Ross said. "They stood out that night."

The next scheduled Open Mic Night is Friday, Aug. 10.
