Kohl discusses assortment of topics with Prescott students

PRESCOTT - When Herb Kohl thought of running for the U.S. Senate seat in Wisconsin in 1988, he initially didn't think too highly of his chances.

"When the job opened up, I didn't think I was a willing candidate," he said.

Nonetheless, Kohl won the seat that year and has been elected to three six-year terms since, including last year, when he easily defeated Robert Lorge.

Besides being a U.S. Senator, Kohl is also well-known in Wisconsin as the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks National Basketball Association (NBA) team since 1985 and helping build his family-owned business, Kohl's department stores, as he was President from 1970 through the sale of the corporation in 1979.

Kohl, 72, stopped in at Prescott High School last Wednesday to answer questions in teacher Jeff Ryan's civics classes.

"It gives me a chance to do something good," Kohl said about being a U.S. Senator. "Everyday is an exciting day in Washington D.C."
