Elmwood MS Lego team on its way to state

ELMWOOD - In its first year, the Elmwood Middle School Lego League team has achieved quite an honor.

The team, sponsored by OEM Fabricators out of Woodville has qualified for the State FLL (First Lego League) meet to be held this Sunday at Appleton East High School. Elmwood qualified for state by placing 8th in the regional meet Nov. 9 in Menomonie. (OEM's other two teams they sponsored, Baldwin-Woodville and Menomonie also qualified by placing 10th and 2nd respectively.)

"It's been a big learning experience for all of us," said advisor Jodi Pulk as she is one of three along with Kim Shields and Andrea Nimtz. The team under the name of 'Lego My Eggo' consists of five sixth-graders Emma Gaustad, Kyler Doerr, Jennifer Pulk, Dylan Shields and Dan Freiermuth and seventh-grader Patrick Weix. All are Elmwood students except for Gaustad who attends Spring Valley.

The mission of Lego League is to promote science and engineering in youngsters. Each year, Pulk explained, FLL organizers come up with a different challenge. Two years ago, was the question could there be life on Mars; last year was about health.
