Corrections officer also a cartoonist

STOCKHOLM - Joe Engesser considers himself a lucky man.

Since 1992, he has been a corrections officer for the Dakota County Sheriff's Department in Hastings, Minn.

"I'm grateful I have a good paying job," he said. "Not every cartoonist has that."

That's right, when he's not working 12-hour shifts for Dakota County or spending time with family, one will likely find Engesser at his work room in his rural Stockholm home, drawing cartoons.

The Blue Earth, Minn., native became interested in cartoons at an early age reading the adventures of Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

The interest in drawing continued through his high school years as his work appeared in the yearbook and local newspaper.

Engesser then moved on to Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa, where he earned a degree in commercial art.

"I wanted to be a cartoonist," he said.
