Longtime owner of Proch's Ballroom in Ellsworth Roger Hines dies

ELLSWORTH, Wis. -- Roger Hines, a longtime Ellsworth businessman who previously operated Proch's Ballroom and, more recently, Dr. Shines Car Wash, died Tuesday. He was 59.

Hines partnered with Bob and Spring Loberg of Ellsworth in Proch's, operating the regionally famous dance pavilion on the village's north side for 14 years before it was destroyed by fire in early 1995.

In recent years, he owned the car wash, which he built on the same site. He operated a beer garden there during the annual run of the Pierce County Fair, too.

Hines was also a bus driver for the Ellsworth School District and an independent contractor who, among other excavating jobs, dug graves around the area.

He was an avid outdoorsman as well, moving several years ago from Ellsworth to rural Pierce County near Maiden Rock. He especially enjoyed hunting.

Hines died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 2 p.m. this Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church, 231 Woodworth St., Ellsworth. Visitation will be at the church this Friday from 4-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service and time of reflection. There will also be one hour of visitation before the service on Saturday.

Hill Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Ellsworth, is assisting the family.
