National livestock show coming to Ellsworth

A national event will be in Ellsworth later this month as the eighth annual 2008 North American South Devon Junior Nationals will be coming to the Pierce County Fairgrounds June 19-21.

The South Devon is a breed of beef cattle that first originated from the counties of Devon and Cornwall in Southwest England, where they have been a distinct breed since the 16th Century. The first South Devons came to the United States in 1969 and 1974. The North American South Devon Association (NASDA) was later formed with the purpose of development, registration and promotion of the South Devon breed in the United States.

Furthermore, according to, the South Devon is known for its quiet, docile nature and, as a result, has earned the nickname "The Gentle Solution." The website also states South Devon has been an ideal breed to use in crossbreeding programs with breeds where temperament may be a problem.

Besides its disposition, South Devon is known for adapting to differing climatic conditions and their colors, as they are primarily red or black.

@t:The 2008 event came to Ellsworth thanks to the efforts of area residents Kurt and Nettie Nelson, who have been NASDA members for almost the last 10 years. Kurt is even currently the NASDA president.

"We've been very involved in the association and we're asked to coordinate," Nettie said. She added, with the fairgrounds nearby, they knew they had a perfect site. The couple lives in Bay City with their two daughters, Megan and Paige.

Over 50 junior members (ages 6-21) and their families from states such as Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin will exhibit 100 head of cattle and participate in the conference activities.
