MINNESOTA NEWS BRIEFS: Motorcyclist dead after Apple Valley crash

(Apple Valley, MN) -- A motorcyclist was dead at the scene and another driver is under arrest after a crash Thursday night in Apple Valley.

Police determined the driver of the car, a 44-year-old Apple Valley woman, had been drinking. She's facing charges of criminal vehicular homicide, driving while impaired, driving after cancellation and open bottle.


A federal indictment charges a Duluth man with carjacking, possession of methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment alleges 34-year-old Elfred Petruk stole a pickup by force on June 18th. He's also accused of conspiring with others to possess and distribute more than five grams of meth Petruk was caught with a nine-millimeter pistol last December and federal law prohibits felons from possessing a firearm at any time. Petruk faces a maximum sentence of 70 years in federal prison if he's convicted on all charges.


If you forgot to make a camping reservation at a Minnesota State Park over the Fourth of July holiday, you may be in luck. The DNR's Pat Arndt says there are still some openings at 18 parks that have more than 10 reservable campsites available. Six of those are within 100 miles of the Twin Cities. And Arndt says 12 state parks in Greater Minnesota each have more than 10 reservable campsites still available. She reminds vacationers that about a third of all campsites in Minnesota state parks are non-reservable and are available first-come, first-served.
