McDonald's set to open Thursday

The sign says it all -- the Ellsworth McDonald's will open Thursday.

What has been rumored for months--heck, even years--will finally come to fruition Thursday as McDonald’s will open in Ellsworth.

“We are extremely excited,” says Rick Lommen, owner/operator of the Ellsworth McDonald’s. “We think this will be a great location for us. The community has been very welcoming to us. We are looking forward to it.”

The McDonald’s will be located at 159 W. Main St., or the location of the former Army Reserve Center. Lommen believes the site is “wonderful,” as it will capitalize on Main Street traffic.

The Ellsworth location will become the latest McDonald’s to be part of the Courtesy Corporation, which has 52 McDonald’s restaurants throughout Western Wisconsin, Southeastern Minnesota and Decorah, Ia. Other area locations include River Falls, Menomonie, Baldwin, New Richmond, Durand and Red Wing.

Lommen said Courtesy has been looking at Ellsworth for years, as McDonald’s has been emphasizing a small-town retail concept as of late. Instead of a McDonald’s that stands by itself, the Ellsworth McDonald’s was built as part of a small strip mall. Lommen said he expects the second tenant in the building in the near future. Courtesy doesn’t own the building, as Dan Acker owns it.

“It’s a little smaller size but everything else is regular McDonald’s,” Lommen said, including a double drive-thru lane, which will reduce further wait for customers.

Lommen also said look for McDonald’s to be contributors in the community. According to the website,, all McDonald’s stores create and participate in numerous fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Examples have included wish list drives to raising money from a pie in the face fundraiser. He also mentioned grant applications for area businesses are available on the website as well.

Lommen said Ellsworth’s restaurant will employ about 60 people, with many of them being of school age.

“We know for many this will be their first job,” he explained. “And we want to teach them the proper skills and training so they can use for the rest of their life.”

The Ellsworth McDonald’s will be open 5 a.m.-11 p.m., Sundays-Thursdays, and 5 a.m.-midnight, Fridays and Saturdays. Lommen said there will be multiple promotions ongoing over the first four days, including items such as Egg McMuffin, Chicken McNuggets and Cinnamon Melts at a special price. Guests will also have the chance to register to win Minnesota Twins baseball or ValleyFair Amusement Park, Shakopee, Minn., tickets.
