Flett new owner of Compass Financial

Ashley Flett was faced with a decision when she heard owner Rich O’ Connell was retiring and selling Compass Financial in Ellsworth: start over from scratch with a new boss or become the boss herself.

Flett chose the latter and took over in September.

“Being an entrepreneur is just in my blood,” she said, as her mother Carolyn Gaslin and grandmother Vivian Hoikka are/were business owners themselves.

A couple months into the job, Flett loves the decision.

“I love coming to work,” she said. “It’s always something new, and it’s a great feeling finding the best deal for my clients and saving them money.”

Flett, a 2010 Ellsworth High School graduate, started working for O’Connell in high school, thanks to Gaslin, who has her accounting business in the back portion of the Compass building.

“He needed an assistant and I had no idea what insurance was about,” Flett explained.

Eventually, O’Connell taught her the ropes and Flett became licensed.

“I started to get an enjoyment out of it,” she said. Which led Flett to believe college wasn’t for her.

“I’ve got a decent job,” she said. “And, plus I’ve got my daughter (two-year-old Alexis) and my family and grandparents here. “

With the ownership change, Flett said there will be a name change as well, as the business will now be Compass Insurance Agency. Flett said she will be selling life, individual health and Medicare, with the last one being her number one interest of clients.

“I want to relieve some of the stress for families,” she said. “Individual health is a scary world for those who have never had it before.”

Flett believes, by working for the last four years, clients trusted her when she took over.

“They have been more than joyous to see me,” she said. “Everyone seems to be happy. I have a really great group of clients.”

Compass Insurance Agency is open by appointment Mondays-Fridays and can be reached at (715) 273-5039.
